Newsletter - Term 1 Week 10

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

6 April 2023

Kia ora koutou

It is with sadness that we say haere rā to Mrs McKenzie. Fleur has been with us at NSC for the last two years and has decided to head off on an overseas adventure for a few years. As much as we will miss Mrs McKenzie a great deal, we wish her all the very best for the future and look forward to receiving updates from the Northern Hemisphere. The students and staff appreciate her last two years of service to NSC. Mrs McKenzie was officially farewelled by the students at our assembly on Wednesday, with today being her last day of teaching.

The Northern Southland Swimming Pool Golf Ball Drop fundraiser has been extremely well supported. Thank you for purchasing tickets and/or asking your friends or family to do the same. Tickets can be sold up to Wednesday 1 May. Extra tickets can be collected from the school office. You can purchase tickets at NSC and also a range of businesses in Lumsden. Weather permitting, the Golf Ball Drop will be taking place at 2.30pm on Friday 5 May onsite at NSC. We welcome one and all to come and watch the helicopter drop the golf balls. We are also planning a sausage sizzle that day for anyone who may be a bit peckish. Again, thank you for supporting this initiative that will future proof the pool by upgrading the heating system and installing solar panels.

Northern Southland College is holding a Teacher Only Day on Monday 24 April. This is another Ministry of Education mandated day to help us prepare for the new NCEA assessment implementation. With ANZAC Day on Tuesday 25 April, the first day for students in term two is Wednesday 26 April.

Finally, thank you for your ongoing support of NSC in all that we do. Having willing parents and caregivers helping with camps, trips, sports and cultural activities, to name a few is essential to give our students the best experiences possible. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you wish to help or if there is anything we can do to support your child(ren).

Year 12 Career Ready

Students at Northern Southland College undertook mock interviews with Rob Scott - Mayor of Southland and Southland District Councillor Matt Wilson as part of Great South's Work Ready Passport programme. This opportunity allows employers to connect with, and help build confidence & capability in our rangatahi as we prepare them for the world of work. A huge thank you to Rob, Matt and all our employer networks who continue to support our programme and invest in youth.

Payments for Student Accounts

Please remember to include enough detail when making payments to the college to ensure we can allocate your payment correctly and to the right account. We need the following information:
Reference Student’s Name
Description Activity or contribution
If you make fortnightly payments, unless otherwise indicated by you, we will prioritise the allocation to charges that require clearing before your child can participate (e.g. sporting teams or camps).

Year 9 /10 Fashion

Students are making clothing for the charity “Dress a girl around the world”, sewing shorts for boys and dresses for girls in the Pacific and other countries beyond. We’re very proud of these beginner sewers and their awesome work on their first project, now onto the girls dresses!

Lost Property

Photos of the lost property for Term 1 were posted on Facebook on Friday 31 March. All unclaimed lost property that is still there at the end of Week 2 Term 2 will be donated.

Please ensure items of clothing are named as this makes it much easier for office staff to return it to its rightful owners.

Staggered Board of Trustee Elections

The Board of Trustees (BOT) elections at Northern Southland College have previously been held on a three-year cycle. The current Board Representatives would like to make a change by holding mid-term elections of the parent representatives as it is felt this would provide better continuity of expertise governing the school.

For more information on the process of Staggered (mid-term) elections, please look at this link. https://www.schoolboardelections.org.nz/board-resources/staggered-mid-term-elections/

The Board of Trustees would like to give notice to parents and students that this matter will be discussed and decided on at the Board of Trustees meeting held at 6pm on Monday 8th May, 2023 at the school. Parents and students have a right to attend this meeting (and any other BOT meeting) as part of the consultation process. It is the Board’s decision which three positions are for the three-year term of office and which two are for the 18 month term. The proposed date for the first mid-term election would be April, 2024

It would be helpful if you could notify the Board’s secretary by emailing anna.highfield@nsc.school.nz if you are going to attend so we can pick a suitable venue within the school.

Travel and Tourism Trip to The Coffee Bomb and Welcome Rock

On 28th March the Travel and Tourism class headed up to Garston to find out a bit about a couple of local farmers, who have diversified to be able to enjoy the tourism market. The weather was a little unkind but we managed to find out some fantastic information in between the snow showers. Our first stop was The Coffee Bomb where Robert and Kylie Durling chatted to the students (in between serving customers) . They spoke about their business and how important the tourist market is to them (both domestic and international). Robert gave some great tips, one that really stood out was to 'not be that employee who only does the minimum and is ready to knock off at 4:55. Be someone who is willing to do the extra work, as that's when other opportunities for success come your way.'
After refueling our bodies with some amazing food and hot drinks, we headed up the road a little to see Tom O'Brien at Welcome Rock. Tom has a high country farm which he allows people to come and hike or bike on. The farm is also used for The Revenant (an Ultra Adventure Race). Tom explained how important it is to look after what we have so that it is still around for years to come. We had a look around the very successful bio-intensive market garden that is on his farm. A weather change meant that it was a quick stop at The Coffee Bomb for more food and hot drinks, before heading back to school. Tom left us with three important things to think about when running a business: Quality, Consistency and Brand label.
