PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to our amazing teacher and colleague, Miss Culberson. In 2021, we were incredibly fortunate that Miss Culberson chose to continue her career in education with us. Although she was inexperienced in the New Zealand Curriculum and our kiwi culture, Miss Culberson’s opinion was ‘Maths is Maths right’!
As I said in our school farewell assembly on Friday morning, we certainly hit the jackpot with the hire of Miss Culberson. Rachel is not only an outstanding educator but most importantly she has a wonderful inclusive nature. The professional caring relationships that Rachel has fostered and nurtured with staff, students and our community is a testament to her integrity. She has a zest for life and unfailingly optimistic outlook on everything. We will miss the immense contribution Rachel has made to our school, our students, our staff and NSC culture.
As Term two ends, I want to share information about the wide range of curricular and extra-curricular activities that have been offered to our students this term.
Two overnight camps went away, the Year 11 Kepler Track Tramp and the Year 13 Biology Portobello Trip.
We have three hockey teams competing weekly in Invercargill and another team playing in Gore. Four NSC basketball teams travel to Gore weekly to play at Archer Stadium. On Saturdays, many of our students play netball in Winton and rugby throughout the province.
A van full of keen rock climbing students head to Invercargill weekly to train in preparation for the upcoming Southland Secondary School Competition. Our clay target shooters also represent NSC in weekend shooting competitions and our keen runners have been to cross country events across Southland.
Class day trips included an Agriculture farm visit to drench and draft sheep, a Tourism trip to Te Anau, DTY deck building in Lumsden, a barista course in Invercargill and a sport coaching course at NSC.
These trips and activities would not happen without the support of our NSC staff and amazing parent and community volunteers. Thank you one and all for your outstanding service to our students. We could not provide all these wonderful opportunities without you.
Mid-year school reports are being published on Monday 3 July. You can email any teacher to gain further insight if required (firstname.lastname@nsc.school.nz)
I encourage you all to make time to meet with our teachers at parent interviews on Thursday 27 July, (Week Two of Term Three).

Numeracy Testing at NSC
Last week, our Year 9's and 10's participated in the Pilot Numeracy Testing for NZQA. This Numeracy Test will replace the system of obtaining numeracy credits through achievement standards that has been used in the past.
Starting in 2024, Year 11 students will have to pass the Numeracy Assessment to earn their Level 1 credits. NZQA has allowed schools to pilot the assessment before it becomes mandatory, and NSC decided to participate. This pilot gives our Year 9's and 10's a look at this type of assessment and offers them the opportunity to earn their Numeracy credits before Year 11.
Any Year 9 or 10 student who passes the assessment will receive their Numeracy credits, even though they are not yet in Year 11. There will be another opportunity to sit the exam in Term 4, and from then on it will be offered twice a year. Our Year 9's and 10's worked hard to prepare for this exam and gave it a good go! Results should be available at the beginning of Term 4.

Decorating the wall in the Library
The Arts Council has been running a competition for houses to decorate the coloured panels in the library. Each house has a panel on the wall that is the same as their house colour and the Arts Council and Mrs Pannett thought it would be a good idea to decorate these. Here are the results, Lintley is a work in progress?!

Agri Kids
Last Friday we had our final guest for the term to prepare our team for grand final. Keith from Agricentre South come out to share his knowledge on the Boomer 25c (as that’s been a clue for grand final). All keen students had a very small drive of it, where we learned that very few had perfect tractor habits!! All the best to Angus, Fletcher and Georgia as they head to Timaru next weekend to compete. Thank you to all of the sponsors who have come in to help us train throughout the term (Honda, FMG, Ministry of Primary Industries, Ravensdown and New Holland). Hopefully your tips and tricks will be remembered by students! Thanks also to Beef and Lamb who have contributed to the team travel costs. Good luck!!

Year 7 & 8 FTY
The Year 7 & 8 Food Technology students have been working on creating a cookie for the last few weeks. They had to research all the ingredients, amounts needed, weigh the correct amounts needed and create labels with all the correct nutritional information on them.
