PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Last Monday we welcomed our new English teacher, Mrs Richelle Maree and her family to Northern Southland College. We wish them every success at NSC and know that Mrs Maree and family will very quickly become an integral part of our school community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Little for looking after Mrs Maree’s English classes since the beginning of Term Two. Mrs Little has been an outstanding English teacher and we cannot thank her enough for helping out in our time of need.

Earlier this week I sent an app notification out regarding the resumption of the teachers’ union (PPTA) industrial action. The PPTA has been negotiating a new teaching contract for their members for approximately a year without resolution. Deciding to implement industrial action that impacts teaching and learning is not something that the PPTA takes lightly. The reality is that the education sector is in crisis. Both primary and secondary education training establishments have less people than ever enrolling in teacher training, and more teachers than ever before are leaving the profession. It is getting increasingly difficult to meet the varied and complex needs of our students. The only chance for improvement is with a settlement that attracts people to join the teaching profession, that encourages current teachers to stay in the profession and implements mechanisms that support schools to meet the needs of all students. Please support our teachers.

NCEA Numeracy Exam
This year NSC is piloting the new NCEA Numeracy exam with the Year 9s and 10s. This exam will be required for all Year 11 students starting next year, so we want to make sure our students are prepared and have familiarity with the exam.
The exam will be held Wednesday, 15 June for the Year 10s and Thursday, 16 June for the Year 9s. The exam will be during Period 1 each day, so please make sure your student is on time to school on their specified day.
When students pass this exam, no matter their year level, they will receive their Numeracy credit. Numeracy credits are mandatory for obtaining Level 1 NCEA starting in 2024. The exam is online and marked by NZQA, so the results will not be available for several weeks. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Jill Bell (Maths HOD) at jill.bell@nsc.school.nz

School App
A reminder to select the Sport in the Alert Subscriptions your child is signed up to on the School App. This is another great tool we use as a school to keep parents/caregivers and students up to date with any relevant information.
- Select the relevant alert groups by clicking on the tick in the top right hand corner of the screen. Select the sport and then the team that your child participates in.
-
Please also delete any groups your child is no longer involved in.

Online Driver Safety Training Targeted at Teens
We provide a robust online course which includes video training modules focused where it counts: on driver awareness, driver behaviour, driver well being and content relating to Road Code Topics.
The course specifically focuses on these areas, as the majority of road accidents are due to the actions and attitudes of the driver: for example inattention, distractions like teen passengers, mobile phone use, fatigue and stress.
Arm Your Students With Knowledge To Keep Them Safe
You know more than most, teenage brains are still developing including the important prefrontal cortex!
Support your young learners during this time by providing them with key information about driver safety, that will not only benefit them, but others on the road too.
Our course is super easy to implement at your school, and only takes a few steps and it will be ready to use!
Online course modules are available on our secure Learning Management System (LMS), or we can add to yours.
If you’d like to learn more about our targeted Schools Young Driver Course and how it could benefit your students, please contact us. Kevin Wall 0800 226 699 | sales@sharpdrive.co.nz
