Newsletter - Term 2 Week 8

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

16 June 2023

Kia ora koutou

We have a number of school property projects in motion that I would like to update you about. Earlier this year room 10 was removed in preparation for two new classrooms to be installed in the same area. Last week we were informed that consent had been granted which triggered the delivery of the first two of six classroom sections. These have been built in Nelson and arrived at NSC last Friday. The fly in the ointment is that although the moving company believed the school grounds are firm enough to position the buildings beside the building platform, this was not to be. You may notice the two pieces currently in residence at the Lumsden swimming pool carpark. The building company will continue with foundation preparation and make a plan to get the six classroom pieces onsite in the weeks ahead.

Currently our school is being heated with a ‘temporary’ diesel boiler. The Ministry of Education appointed company managing this contract are awaiting consent to begin disassembly of the current defunct boiler so that the replacement boiler can be installed. This process will take many months. We hope to have the new boiler ready for use in 2024.

We also are waiting for final approval for our next 10 Year Property Plan. The Ministry of Education work with a property consultant to identify and prioritise the building and maintenance programme. Our Northern Southland College Board of Trustees also get input into the plan. This is an important process that ensures that NSC is fit for purpose and future proofed.

Smaller projects in the pipeline are our internet upgrade and remote schools upgrade. The internet work is scheduled in the next few weeks. This will increase our connection speed and replace outdated network hardware. The remote school upgrade will improve staff and student safety and wellbeing by improving lighting, insulation, flooring and power outlets throughout NSC.

We have worked hard to ensure that our school is a safe place which gives the best environment for teaching and learning. Next time you are at NSC, come and have a look at our facilities. They are outstanding and will only get better in the coming months and years.

Last Friday, Catherine from Ravensdown came into the Agrikids Club to share her knowledge on soil and fertilizer. She brought in some different samples and students completed a quiz on all the things she had spoken about - and they did a good job!

to put together a great slideshow and talk to students.

Quarantine Island

Year 13 Biology Trip
Day one: We left Lumsden early in the morning to arrive at the Portobello, Otago Marine Research Centre.
We went through information about handling of crabs, their habitat, behaviour and conditions they live in.

Day Two: We started our investigation on half-crabs, there were 10 crabs per person to research and we were able to choose from variables like salinity, temperature and light. We could test how those variables affected the crabs by using re-sheltering, feeding, flipping and kinesis methods.

Day Three: We repeated our investigation to get another set of data and to compare our previous data.

We were very thankful to be able to stay on Quarantine Island and to the teachers that helped us cook and clean.

Drenching

On Tuesday 30 May the Year 11 Agriculture class headed out to the Elder’s farm, to complete their drenching and drafting for their practical skills standard.

Over the year they have to complete three skills, and they will gain 4 credits from that. They all had a go at drafting off lambs with a blue dot and then drenching a race. They were split into two groups so spent half the day there each.

Thank you very much to Jonny Elder
for having us and
helping students
perfect their drenching technique!

  • Select the relevant alert groups by clicking on the tick in the top right hand corner of the screen. Select the sport and then the team that your child participates in.
  • Please also delete any groups your child is no longer involved in.
