PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Thank you to our NSC parents and caregivers that were able to attend the subject teacher interviews last night. For those of you that were unable to attend and want to speak with your child’s teachers please email the teacher(s) (firstname.lastname@nsc.school.nz) or contact the school office (office@nsc.school.nz or phone 03 248 7121) and our support staff will help you out. You do not have to wait for our parent interviews to do this. Please contact us any time that you need information.
A reminder that all notifications for things going on at NSC will be sent out on the school app. You can download School App NZ for free in Google Play or Apple App Store. We also pass on information via the NSC Facebook Page and at times, to caregiver email addresses. If you feel like information is being missed please contact the school office.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Mathematics teacher Mrs Menaz Sharma. Mrs Sharma has been with us since the beginning of Term 3 and is starting to settle into life at NSC. When you see Mrs Sharma out and about please go and say hi.
You may have seen our new classrooms onsite at the east end of the NSC campus. I received the keys to the building today. However, we have to wait for Southland District Council to sign off before we are able to use the two classrooms. We are hoping we will be teaching in there in a few weeks. In other property news, work to remove our old defunct boiler will begin shortly in preparation for installation of the new pellet boiler.
Finally, we have decided to move our senior school mock exams to the beginning of next term. Our senior students and senior subject teachers were in favour of the move to ensure that we are not rushing through course material this term.
Please look on the Kamar parent portal and/or contact your child’s teacher if you would like more information about internal and external assessments.

Year 13 Snow Camp
On Monday our year 13 students ventured into the great outdoors for two days for some cross country skiing at the Cardrona Snow Farm. We all had a lesson to figure out how to use cross country skis to go uphill, downhill, on the flat and how to get back up when we fall.
The skill of how to stand up again turned out to be essential, as all of us fell over, some of us more than others. Much to Catherine's disgust, Harry proclaimed that he was the best cross country skier as he was the last of us to fall.
After our lesson we cross country skied to the Musterer's Hut where we stayed for the night. It was a fabulous hut with everything provided (apart from sleeping bags and food) and even though we were in the mountains surrounded by snow it was extremely warm inside the hut.
Ruby and Mrs Ussher were lucky to get taken to the hut in the Snow Farm's side by side with our overnight bags. Then they went for a snow shoe around the hills. We all had a great time playing cards, eating great food and enjoying each other's company. The group went out later in the evening to stargaze before more cards, yarns and bed.
On Tuesday we were up nice and early ready and rearing to go. The weather was clear but the snow was frozen which made it a challenge to ski on. The ski back to the administration area was all good with a few students even getting to swap their skis and try some snow shoes. Thanks so much to Mrs Ussher, Mr Elder and Mr Wilkinson for coming on the trip with us.

The Maths department have loaned out or students have 'borrowed' seven calculators which the maths department need back. If students and parents could please check and see if they have one of these calculators at home or in a bag and return it to the maths department this would be appreciated.

AgriKids
Georgia Taylor, Fletcher Drysdale and Angus McFadzien competed in Timaru in the Grand Final in the middle weekend of the holidays.
They had a good day completing their modules, doing an Ag exam and then finishing with a race-off. They did well and finished the competition in the middle of the standings.
It was an enjoyable weekend and thank you to the parents that came up to support. Also thanks to Balfour Young Farmers and Beef and Lamb for helping with some of the travel/accommodation costs and everyone that came in and helped the students practice.

Year 12 Agriculture
This week, as our last collection of information, the Year 12 Ag students who are looking into the use of alternative proteins in NZ baked some cupcakes with cricket flour.
Staff and students were then invited to taste them and were surveyed to see what they thought of them and if they would use cricket flour as a substitute.
Now they will start collating the survey results and the thoughts on the cupcakes to complete their write up on whether there is a future in NZ for alternative proteins.
Thanks to those who completed the survey at the end of last term.

Community Cultural Night
On Thursday 20th July the 2nd annual Community Cultural night was held in Lumsden at the Memorial Hall. There were performers from the Northern Southland Kindergarten, Lumsden Primary School and NSC. The NSC Kapa Haka group performed some waiata they had been practicing. It was a good chance to perform in front of an audience before Polyfest in August.
Dineli Arabaya Wathukarage, Shaffia Ralston and M J Andrews also performed a Sri Lankan dance. As the audience members enjoyed supper there was a spontaneous singalong of well known waiata where students of NSC and Lumsden Primary School sang together. We hope there will be performers from other cultures join us in 2024
