PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
From 2024 all schools are required to publish strategic plans that meet renewed Ministry of Education priorities (National Education and Learning Priorities) and reflect the local community. An important part of the process is to consult with all members of our school community.
The questions in this survey summarise the key parts of the current NSC strategic plan and annual goals, and provide an opportunity to give feedback. This will help us develop a clear strategic direction for our school.
Paper copies of the survey are available at the NSC office and in various businesses in our Northern Southland Community. They come with pre-paid addressed envelopes for you to pop into the post.
A QR code will also be made available for people to scan for a link to the same survey.
If you have any questions about the survey or would like to share your thoughts in person, please contact the office to make an appointment to see us.
The NSC Board of Trustees appreciates your feedback. It is vitally important for us to gather a wide range of views.
Thank you for taking the time to complete this form.

Christchurch University Trip
Yes, this trip finally went ahead. Due to plane cancellations on 20 June, we boarded the flight to Christchurch on Friday 4 August . Ten Year 13 students accompanied by the “Elite Team” of Miss Stark, Mrs Stalker and Mrs Duncan. Note to oneself – do not travel overseas with Lachy Elder as he lost his boarding pass in the first 15 minutes!
A smooth trip to Christchurch which saw Flight Attendants Bayer and Villamayor take charge of the lolly handing out. Into the rental cars and we were off to the University of Canterbury. A drop off on the sidewalk – nobody was using it – and then a run to meet our tour guide.
Students had a guided tour of the campus, attended faculty lectures and visited the Halls of Residence on offer. Ms Stark and Mrs Stalker took a group of students to Lincoln University to give them an opportunity to look around and get a taste of ‘uni life’. The University of Canterbury bookshop proved popular, Mrs Coghlan would be proud of her Year 13 English class and their love of books. Off to the Commodore Hotel for a lemonade and pizza before arriving back at the Christchurch airport. Madeline took the prize for having the most hand luggage!
We were very thankful to land in Invercargill, as the pilot gave us a warning that due to fog, we could be on our way back to Christchurch. But he knew better than to not get Miss Stark and Charlotte back to the deep south for their netball semi-finals. A fabulous group to take away who now have the hard decision of ‘what next for my life’?

Ministry of Education reminder for caregivers: supervise children at bus stops.
A reminder for caregivers that it is their responsibility to supervise their children prior to the children boarding the school bus in the morning and once they get off the school bus in the afternoon.
This is especially pertinent during the winter months as visibility is poorer due to the time of year and the weather conditions. School buses are not able to wait at bus stops for children to be collected so it is important that the caregiver is on time.

Year 11 Career Ready
Jason Herrick, an ex-student and local dairy farmer, visited the Year 11 Career Ready class on Wednesday to talk about his own journey for physical and mental wellbeing.
The students are currently working on a unit standard about personal wellbeing. Jason's discussion with them was really helpful for the students to start working on their own personal well-being goals. We really appreciate people giving their time to come and talk to the students.

PTA Fundraising
We have realised it is getting harder to organise the large food tent that we have run in the past, which requires a LOT of manpower and extra resources plus many hours of planning and prep. In saying that, it has been discussed and decided that the NSC PTA is still going to run a fundraiser at the Southern Field Days (Waimumu) in February 2024. But this is going to look a lot different to what we have historically done in the past and totally down-scaled to a much more manageable and hopefully less stressful fundraising event.
We are looking to run a small food tent with just the BBQ and should only require 4-5 people to run it at any given time.
We would like to have another meeting (Monday 16 October) to discuss options on how we can simplify, but still make it worth the effort and ultimately raise a significant amount of money for our school to go towards our new school playground venture. Please note that from here on in all PTA fundraising efforts will go towards the playground and grounds upgrade.
We encourage and welcome all families to get involved and come along to this meeting to make a plan.
If you have any questions regarding any fundraising ideas or PTA matters, please don’t hesitate to contact Andrea Bulleid, Ph 027 359 6714 (Chairperson) or the school office.
PTA - Quiz Night Fundraiser
The PTA request each school family to donate an item for the raffle prizes (1 per family) for the quiz on 15th September. The donated item can be anything – baking, something handcrafted or maybe an unwanted gift (nothing second-hand please). Think outside the square and be creative this doesn’t need to cost money. Fundraising for the upgrade to NSC playground & outdoor spaces. All items to be delivered to school gymnasium by Thursday 14th September at the latest please. Any queries phone Andrea 027 359 6714.

CareerFest - Friday 28 July
The trip to the 2023 CareerFest was a huge success. Held at the ILT stadium 87 students and the “Dream Team” of Mr Jackson, Ms Eason, Miss Stark and Mrs Duncan were presented with a lot of career opportunities.
Firstly, we were treated to a presentation from the Trade Collective Ltd. This engaging talk was to motivate students to think about getting into the Trade sector. Logan and Jesse gave perspectives on both their Trades and Personal Life experiences.
Then into the main arena where the stall holders were bombarded with questions and harassed for freebies. NSC students fully immersed themselves in this experience. We should be proud of our Year 10-12 students who were immaculately dressed and had impeccable manners.
We as a school are lucky to have STAR funding which funded the buses for these students to travel.
A huge thank you to Jesse McKenzie who thanked the Trade Collective team and to Ava Leach who thanked the organisers in the main hall on the microphone!
