No doubt you will be aware of the concerning nationwide rise in youth vaping rates. Schools throughout New Zealand are increasingly having to deal with this issue. The latest information we have is that over 25% of New Zealand secondary school aged students own a vape and more disturbingly over half of all students have used a vape.
NSC is not immune to this.
We have zero tolerance for students that vape or are in possession of vapes at school. First time offenders will complete school detentions with a focus on education around the known effects of vaping.
Repeat offenders and those that supply other students will be dealt with more severely.
In all situations we will contact caregivers and offer outside agency support to students who may want assistance to quit.
The bottom line is that we will do our best to ensure that our students are not vaping or being exposed to vaping at NSC.
If you have any concerns around your child vaping please get in touch so that we can work together.

Ag Innovation Day
A group of eight year 10’s went to Invercargill on Tuesday to have a go at making some inventions to help solve some problems faced in the agricultural sector.
We went in pairs from our own school and then got put with a pair from another school.
We had three problems which were problems with the environmental footprint, clean water and the testing of soils, carbon and pasture growth.
We all enjoyed coming together with other people our age from other schools and problem solving.
Although none of our groups won we really enjoyed the opportunity to have a go at it, and the free lunch was unreal. “I liked learning new ways to help the environment” - Jacob

New World Cookware Sticker Promotion
If anybody has New World stickers that they are not wanting for themselves, the NSC Food Technology, Hospitality & Home Economics department would love them to acquire some new cookware for our students.
During a recent New World promotion, NSC accumulated enough stickers from community generosity to enable each of our Year 12 Hospitality students to have a cooks knife each for their exclusive use. Any donations of stickers can be left at the school office.

Internet Connectivity
Having access to the Internet is a critical part of life these days. We know that not everyone can currently access Internet at home, and the Ministry of Education wants to change that. If you are a household with a school-aged child and no Internet, or you know of a household like this, please contact the college office and we can arrange for the Ministry team to get in touch. Free of charge until the end of June 2024.

Tournament Week Results
Netball
Last week, our A grade netball team headed to Invercargill for four days of games - 2 each day. We started our week well and had 2 good wins on day one which set us up for the week.
Tuesday bought a loss (which we still got the points for as it was an invitational team that filled a gap in the draw) and a big win with a relaxing soak at Splash Palace in between.
On Wednesday we returned to our winning ways which meant that we knew we were in the final on Thursday afternoon and both of our Thursday games would be against Twizel Area School!
Unfortunately, we couldn't get over the line in either game but we ended up coming home with the C grade runner-up trophy.
The team played some brilliant netball over the week and all had a good time.
Lawrence Area School - 30-15 win
Mackenzie College - 28-26 win
Catholic Cathedral College - 37-22
Kaikorai Valley College - 37-27
Twizel Area School - 35-28 loss Twizel Area School - 28-26 loss
A big Thank you to Miss Stark, Anne Armitage and Nic Duthie for all their help over tournament.

Basketball - Y9/10 Tournament
It was an early start for the basketball team as we travelled to Dunedin. The Edgar Centre was bustling with activity, with both A grade Girls and Boys teams and Premium grade players.
Two games were played on the first day with a lot of experience gained, but no wins.
This continued as our team up-skilled and finally won our last game. Several injuries occurred but our team mates bravely pushed on while bandaging and bracing their bodies to finish with a win. This placed us 14th in the draw.
We had a great time, good food, and we were able to see a lot of Dunedin too. Thank you to our excellent coach - Adam Bayer and to Mrs Gullick and Miss Retallick for giving your time up to help us.

SI Secondary School Cross Country Motorbike Race.
Mitchell McLachlan competed in the South Island Secondary School Cross Country Motorbike Race last weekend. He had a great day and it was a great experience. Mitchell said it would be good to get some more NSC students next year to represent the college. Tanner Price was Mitchell's pit crew and was a great help.
