A heads up that Friday 17 November is a Teacher Only Day. This is a Ministry of Education mandated Teacher Only Day to ensure that we are ready to implement NCEA Level 1 in 2024. If you have any questions about NCEA please get in touch.
In the last few weeks, we have seen plenty of NSC student success recognised and celebrated:
- Makenzie Appleyard-Drake was presented with her NSC YouthMark Award at the Ascot last week.
- On the weekend our Grass Kart team dominated all other entrants at Central Southland College to win five trophies, including the overall title.
- At the Southland Secondary School Sports Awards last Monday night, Marnie Clark, Jack Heslip, Mitchell McLachlan, Cody Lowe and Gemma Bullied were all recognised for their respective achievements in Clay Target Shooting, Paddles Up Kayaking and Water Skiing.
Today we welcomed our contributing schools Year 6 students to attend NSC for a transition day. Mrs Leach has gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure that all students in the Year 6 incoming cohort are informed and excited about their next steps in education. Today, the students are in various subject classes and get to participate in clubs activities period 5.

We would appreciate your support and attendance at our NSC PTA Quiz, at 7pm in the NSC gymnasium. Food and drinks are available for purchase and raffle tickets will be sold as well. This is a family friendly event, so if you have no plans for tonight then come on down!

Year 6 Transition Visit
Today our incoming students for 2024 have been busy in various classes. Students whipped up some delicious banana muffins in Food Technology and learnt how to tie off knots for fencing in Agriculture. They enjoyed some running games in PE, created some Picasso Art in Art, learnt how to navigate Spheros in Digital, discovered the wonderful world of literature in English, had a go at enlargements in Maths and got very busy being scientists in Science.
It is great to have these students here at NSC building their sense of belonging and getting to know their teachers for next year. We look forward to having them back on site on Monday 20 November for their next visit.

Firefighters walk for charity
On Wednesday, a group of year 10 students were fortunate enough to cheer on Guy Johnstone and Steve Turton, two firefighters who are walking from Bluff Fire Station to Queenstown Fire Station this week for the 'I Am Hope' charity. They will be finishing this afternoon, which coincides with the official Gumboot Friday fundraiser day.
Our students were very excited to share with Guy and Steve that our mufti day last Friday raised $230 for Gumboot Friday, AND that when we met the firefighters in Lumsden they were exactly half way between Bluff and Queenstown.

Grass kart report
On the 28 of October, the culmination of 7 months work occurred when the Grass Kart Team competed in the annual Southland Schools competition. There were 16 schools at the event ranging from Fiordland to Gore and all the way down to Hargest in Invercargill. The day dawned bright and slightly watery, but still better than the 6 cm of snow that we had the day before. The team traveled down to Central Southland College and set up the kart to be judged. Once this had occurred, we went over to the school hall where each of the teams shared a presentation with the other teams about how their build went (and the problems that they faced).
Once the presentations were completed, we went back to the kart to check to see if there were any repairs required before we started to race. We did well this year, with no repairs required.
So straight out to the racing.
The racing is broken up into four parts.
'The Go to Woe', where you start in a box and drive up as fast as you can to a cone, round that, and then drive back to finish in a box.
'The Slalom', where you start in a box and weave your way through a set of cones, turn around and do the same on the way back. Again, you need to finish in the box.
For these events, the best time counts and if you hit a cone or miss the box there are large time penalties.
'The Drag Race', which is as advertised -two karts racing each other in a knock out race. We won this event.
The afternoon was spent in relays, where the teams raced each other with 4 drivers doing 2 laps each. The fastest 8 karts went through to the semi final and then the top 4 karts raced in the final. We progressed through the heats and were placed third in the final.
After all these races, it was time for the prize giving - always a nervous time with lots of expectations about the results.
In the end, we did very well. We won all four sections, Performance, Appearance, Construction and Record Keeping, which gave us the overall trophy as well. The only trophy we didn't collect was the relay trophy (in which we got third).
A big well done needs to go out the 7 team members with 280 hours of work going into creating “Mater” and achieving a tremendous result.

Our Year 13 students have been challenging staff to some sporting competitions in their last week at NSC. The Staff won the hockey but unfortunately lost the Netball.
