DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

17 November 2023

Tēnā koutou

The term has rocketed by incredibly fast with a lot being packed into a short number of weeks.

The senior exams have started well with a good number of students taking advantage of the tutorials and exam prep offered by their teachers. Now is the time for our senior students to finish the year off well.

The NSC PTA Quiz went well, though there was plenty of space for more teams. Thanks to Andrea Bulleid and all those that helped in organising a good night out.
Thanks to the Quiz Master Mr Wilkinson for organising the questions. Perhaps next time leave out the round about “Who Came Second” as it turns out, no one remembers!

A great week was had at Year 10 camp, the students were outstanding. Some of the food was less outstanding and lessons were learnt for the Kepler for next year.

Interviews were held on Thursday for Student Leadership roles for 2024. All the interviewees presented themselves well and the Student Leadership for next year will be in good hands.

Eleven of our Year 9 students went with Mrs Elder and took part in the Big Day Out, which is an alternative sporting day in Gore. They had an amazing time and thanks to Mrs Elder for organising this.

Next week our Year 8 students will be heading into Mavora for their camp with Mr Dixon, Mr Shaw, Mrs Retallick and Mrs Coghlan. We have our fingers crossed for nice weather for them.

We have another Transition Day for our Year 7 students for 2024. This is another chance for our new students to become more familiar with the College and to have a small taster of what College life is like.

Ngā mihi nui,
Janelle Barrett
Deputy
Principal

Year 7/8 Humanities

Mrs R's Humanities classes have been experimenting with stop motion recording to get across an environmental message. These are still working in progress but we've already created some pretty slick stop motion.

Year 10 Camp

For our Year 10 camp we tramped from Blue Cliffs out to Port Craig school hut. We went from Monday to Friday carrying everything we needed for the week in our packs. The majority of the trip we were walking and walking and it was always a relief to get to wherever we were heading that day.

We also got to do some other fun stuff that wasn't walking, we got opportunities to have a swim at the beach at both Blue Cliffs and Port Craig.

A few students took a flounder net out at Blue Cliffs and at Port Craig a couple of us got to go fishing off the rocks and actually got a few wee fish which was pretty cool.
On our last night at Port Craig we played the annual game of cricket with the bat that we had to find ourselves, found by Charlie this year we had to try not to get any points in the game because the person with the most had to carry the bat out, which Max ended up doing anyway.

Overall camp was pretty fun even with all the blisters most of us got. We still managed to enjoy it and it was a great opportunity to get to know your classmates better and hang out with people you usually wouldn't talk to. Getting fish and chips in Tuatapere definitely made it all worth it too!

Kamar Parent Portal

Parents can log onto the portal using their unique username and password, these were emailed to parents in March. If you cannot remember your login details please contact the office. Students will have their own password to access limited parts of the portal.

The portal contains attendance information, daily notices, assessment results and more. If you have multiple children attending NSC, you can now switch between them in the portal without having to login separately for each child. To switch between siblings, go to the top right corner of the screen and click the Change Student button (under your child's name) and select from the drop down menu.

To get to the portal, go to https://nsc.school.kiwi On the top right side of the page, enter your username and password.

SPORT TALK

  • Junior Adventure Race - Wednesday 22 November
  • Jonty Carran Tackle 10's Rugby Tournament - Friday 24 November

YMCA Sports Day

On Wednesday the YMCA group came up from Invercargill to give us some sports opportunities and games to take part in. Some of the activities we got to participate in were Archery Tag, Mini Golf, Tug o War and Pickle Ball.
We had lots of fun and enjoyed the sporting activities.
Thanks to the people who came up from Invercargill to provide the equipment and the experience.

Big Day Out

On Thursday 16 November eleven Year 9 students were selected to take part in the annual Big Day Out in Gore. This day is an Active Southland initiative in conjunction with Southland Secondary School Sports to provide access to a range of activities in a safe environment for Year 9/10 students.
We see this as a vehicle to show what activities are available for a range of abilities for our students. The activities consisted of Archery Tag, Indoor Cricket, Gym Work, Futsal and Ice Skating.
All the students approached this day with great enthusiasm and an awesome attitude to give everything a go. All came away with lots of positive feedback on the day.
