Northern Southland College

Newsletter - Term 4 Week 8

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

1 December 2023

Kia ora koutou

I am currently writing this article at the Lakeland Camp, Queenstown. Our incoming Year 13 students are here working together on their Peer Support and Leadership programme. It is a great way to finish the school year and will hold them in good stead when they run Peer Support with our new entrants and in their various leadership positions in 2024. Being able to go mountain biking in the Queenstown Lakes and Northern Southland areas is the icing on the cake. Thank you to Miss Stark, Mr Dixon and Brigid for organising and running this camp.

Speaking of camps, it is great to be able to continue our tradition of holding camps at every year level. This term we have had our Year 10, 8 and 12 students away as well as a number of day trips such as this week’s Mitre 10 Tough Kids event in Invercargill.

On Tuesday night we held our annual Year 13 Leavers function. It was a wonderful occasion to celebrate our graduating students and the contributions they have made to NSC. The overriding emotion I felt was pride.
We are incredibly proud of our Year 13 students and how they have added to the culture of our school. I am also proud of the citations our tutor group teachers read to each student, as it shows how well we know our rangatahi and how much we value each and every one of them. We wish our leavers all the best for the future.

I would like to thank all the whānau and community members that gave feedback for our 2024 Strategic Plan. The Board of Trustees has been working through our draft version and will share it with everyone once we have everything in place. In alphabetical order, our draft goals are Achievement, Attendance, Engagement, Treaty of Waitangi and Wellbeing.

Thank you to our NSC Parent Teacher Association (PTA), who have been working on a new playground for our students. Planning has involved working with our students for ideas and then getting initial costings and budgets sorted. This is going to be a massive undertaking but the result will be worth it. Please support our PTA when we are fundraising and asking for support.

The 2024 school year begins as follows:

Monday 29 January
Year 11, 12 or 13 students that need to confirm their course may be asked to attend. Students required to attend will be contacted if they are required.

Tuesday 30 January
Year 7 and 13 students attend.

Wednesday 31 January
All students attend.

Finally, I would like to thank you all for supporting Northern Southland College in 2023. It has been another extremely productive year and we are all looking forward to a break in the coming weeks.

Pete Wilkinson
Principal

We wish them all the best for 2024.

Year 8 Camp - Mavora

Cold wind, summer breeze, a mix of different weather- that was our camp. Four seasons in one day! Mavora Lakes has very unpredictable weather, changing all the time.

A good start on Tuesday morning loading our gear, nerves rushing through our bodies and saying our goodbyes. Numbering off….7..21..30 we are all here. Piling into our cars, trucks and vans heading to Mavora, the bending gravel roads and the views amaze us!
Unpacking our gear, setting up tents, walking, swimming, sore feet, hot chocolates, capture the flag, fire making, camp duties, set 'things' to do, camp chores and clean up. Free time and fun with friends... talking after lights out... Whoops!

“Push! No - pull! Stop paddling and jump in! We’re going backwards, everyone stop!” I yelled.
It was freezing and no one was excited for the raft race in the cold rain. Thankfully Miss Stark drove us down to the starting line. We jumped into the water and pushed for all we were worth. “It’s cold! I can't feel the ground!" someone called out. “Paddle!" Yelled another desperately. We slowly drifted down the river until we reached Mr Dixon at the swing bridge. He was standing, laughing at us slowly going down the side of the river. “Bye Mr.Dixon!” we all yelled, as we sped up only to hit the back current.“We lost that already! 18 minutes, we are so slow!"
We are back in the van and the only silent one was me. I was sitting in the van heaving for air. Sooo cold! Back to camp, change of clothes, hot Milo and the fire slowly warming me up.

Thanks to the teachers that came on camp with us Mr Dixon, Mrs Coghlan, Mr Shaw, Ms Retallick and Miss Stark for a night. Thanks to the parents that helped out too.

As an added bonus they have also been biking around some of the many mountain bike trails in Queenstown and Northern Southland.

Northern Year 7 & 8 Touch Squad

A group of year 7 and 8 touch players have been taking part in regional tournaments throughout November, travelling to Winton, Invercargill and Queenstown. This was an opportunity to play against teams from Southland and Otago.

It's been a great eye opener to the sport for the team, where our players have been able to develop their skills and gain experience. The team played really well and can be very proud of how they competed. These competitions are about developing players and giving exposure to the sport - we had some wins and some losses.

Thank you to parents and caregivers who supported them. A big thank you to Kate Cocks, Sawyer Jones and Trish Gill for coaching and managing the team.

Squad members: Tom, Hunter B, Natalie, Kahn, Finlay, Flynn B, Kate (superstar coach), Angus, Lachlan G, Zabien and Cooper H.

    • Bushmen - 17th out of 105

Mitre 10 Tough Kids 2023

Fun, wet, freezing - 3 words that best describe yesterday's Tough Kids in Invercargill. There were heaps of obstacles - waterslides, tunnels, a bouncy castle, climbing wall, tyres and ninja warrior type activities. We tackled the course with our friends and even tackled each other to try to make sure others didn't get in front!
It was really awesome and we hope to go again next year.
